Fab4Fitness Altitude Training Falls Creek 2011 - 2012

Falls Creek has become an established pilgrimage for Australian runners of all abilities for over 30 years – it enables athletes to put in a solid block of training at this time of year to set them up for the next months of training and events.

Junior and senior participants can chose programmed activities or their own training. Each day you will have several training sessions. Each session have the option of a run or mountain bike training. Other session options available are: bush walking, road cycling, cycling on windtrainer, strength and conditioning training, MTB or foot orienteering and open water swimming. Also there may be the opportunity to join some training sessions organised by the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) for the junior and senior Victorian endurance athletes.

Participants can choose their length of stay. Priority will be given to participants staying for the full camp.

Accommodation: Self-catered apartments (Linen & Towel provided). The apartments have well appointed kitchens, large lounges with TV/video.

Accommodation and Activities for 5 training days & 4 nights: $240 entire period or $70 per day/night.
Activity Session Only: $15 per session, $25 per day, $70 per entire period. (Family option: 1 adult = 1 child free).

Meals: Guests need to bring their own food. Only tea, coffee, sugar, cooking oil and some condiments are supplied. If you are looking for sharing lunches and dinners with others, let me know and I can put you on the list for the bulk shopping. In this case you need to look after your own breakfast and snacks and contribute financially to the purchase of the bulk shopping and help in cooking and cleaning up.

Transport: The transport to Falls Creek is your responsibility. No other transport is required during the training period. If you are looking for transport for you and your equipment such as a bike or you have the ability to transport another person, please let me know.

Clothing & Equipment: The equipment to bring is in accordance with the activities chosen. If you are interested in cycling training and you have the option of a MTB, it may give you more opportunity for undertaking challenging training using off-road tracks. If you are interested in swimming activities, a wetsuit is necessary for swimming in the freezing water of Falls Creek.

Weather: Warm to very warm during the days and cool during the nights is the probable weather. Days can be cold and rainy, even at this time of the year. Therefore, bring clothing appropriate to a range of conditions, including wet weather gear. Sun Smart policy is highly recommended, e.g. sun cream, hat, sunglasses and long sleeve shirts are the perfect protection during training.

2010/11 Altitude Training Falls Creek Camp report: The camp involved more than 30 athletes from junior to senior from recreational to age group to high performence athletes. The highlight for this year was the introduction of the daily open water swim in the Rocky Valley Lake. The extremely chilly water temperature did not stop the athletes. Having each day the option of choosing activities between running, bushwalking, road bike or mountain bike, gave the participants the ability to personalise the training towards their needs, ability and response to training. Below is the daily report of the 2010/11 Altitude Training Camp in Fall Creek. See you all and maybe new athletes at the 2011/12 Camp.

Day 1 (28 Dec): AM activity: Bike ride from Bonegilla to Mt Beauty to Falls Creek. 16 riders joined in the ride at different stages. The man of the day was Steve (Killer) with 160km, follow by Gabby with 130km and Jennifer and Jason with 110km. Fraser and Kasper were the two juniors with most km - 80km. The PM activity was an easy 8km recovery run.

Day 2 (29 Dec): AM activity: Long slow endurance run along the run course of the 2011 Falls Creek Half Ironman event. The senior squad ran for 1h 40 minutes and the junior squad for 1 hour. The man of the run was Mike, followed by Kevin. In the juniors, Kirsty, Fraser, Risdon and Harrie ran the most. Meanwhile Grant, Mark, John and Kasper left for a 3 hour mountain bike on the high plains of Falls Creek. At 12 noon, 8 mad squad members went for a swim in the Rocky Valley Lake. The extremely chilly water temperature did not stop Claudia, Kirsty, Alison, Jennifer, Jennette, Fabrizio, Kevin and Peter for a 30 minute swim. Epic!!! PM activity was an easy 35km ride along the challenging bike course of the 2011 Falls Creek Half Ironman event. The training day concluded with a cool water pool cool down at the village gate.

Day 3 (30 Dec): AM activity: 22 runners joined the quality interval run session along the aqueduct. The master of the session was Harrie with 12 repetitions of 400 metres, followed by Fraser with 10 repetitions. At 12 noon, the open water swim in the Rocky Valley Lake was on again. The mad swimmers of the session were Peter, Greene and Fabrizio with a 2km swim in the chilly water. Early PM activity: Sarah and Jason led the 35km ride along the challenging bike course of the 2011 Falls Creek Half Ironman event. Other athletes went on a 3 hour mountain bike on the high plains of Falls Creek, while the junior squad decided to go for a splash in the freezing water of Rocky Valley Lake. They did not last long. At 5:30pm the athletes regrouped for the traditional recovery run along the Ropers Track. The training day concluded with a cool water pool cool down at the village gate.

Day 4 (31 Dec): AM activities: Senior Squad - 15km strength run along the My McKay road loop. Junior Squad MTB from Falls Creek village to Cope Hut, Wallace Hat and return. Early PM activity: Road Bike Falls Creek to Mt Beauty 30km, followed by swimming at the Mt. Beauty Pool. At 4:30pm Mark, Kasper, Tom and Risdon bike rode from Mt Beauty to Falls Creek, while Mike and Fabrizio ran the cross country track from Mt Beauty to the Cranky Charlie intersection. All the athletes regrouped for the traditional recovery cool water pool cool down at the village gate. At 7pm all the 25 athletes gathered for the New Year's Eve drink at Allison and Tom's apartment.

Day 5 (1 Jan): First Day of the year and last day of the camp. Fraser went out at 5:30am for his ritual 1st day of the year run along the Ropers Track and up to the lookout. At 7:30 Peter and Jennifer started the 130km bike ride from Falls Creek to Mt Beauty to Bonegilla. All the other athletes departed around lunch time after a active recovery walk on the high plains of Falls Creek.
